Shakti Dance is the yoga of dance. It is a sacred dance form which has its roots in the science and tradition of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan. It implements insights drawn from yogic philosophy to awaken and embody universal principles of harmonious movement. Sara Avtar Olivier, life long dancer and 20-year yoga practitioner, is the creator and founder of this discipline. Tune and tone your body to become a strong and graceful instrument for the divine in you.
The stages of a Shakti Dance class:
1. Tuning in with mantra and mudra
2. Shakti Stretching : rhythmic and meditative floor exercises flowing in coordination with the breath.
3. Standing Exercises : energizing exercises and simple dance sequences, opening the chakras and heightening physical awareness.
4. Free Dance : taking inspiration from the previous phases, the inherent creative impulse is given free reign to express itself.
5. Relaxation : mind, body and spirit are allowed to integrate while releasing tensions.
6. Mantric Choreography : choreographies to mantric music are danced in geometric group formation. Self-repeating sequences stimulate the meditative mind.
7. Meditation : a moment is taken to return to the stillness within.
8. Closing mantra and mudra.
Requirements: Please bring a mat. No experience of yoga or dance is necessary but you will need to have a reasonable level of fitness.
